Some Things to Know About Phosphorus

Phosphorus (P) is all around us. Small concentrations are present in all lakes, streams, oceans and seas. It is in the soil and in rocks and minerals, plants and animals. It is present in every living cell and is essential to all forms of life…human, animal and plant. Phosphorus is used to fertilize crops around the world. The most common source is phosphate rock, most of which is recovered for processing by surface mining techniques.

Phosphorus Fertilization and Environmental Protection

There is no question that phosphorus (P) is essential to crop production. Agronomically, it is one of the three primary plant nutrients, along with nitrogen (N) and potassium (K). It is also essential for healthy fish and other aquatic life in our lakes and streams.

Agronomic Use of Phosphate Rock for Direct Application

Phosphorus is critically needed to improve soil fertility and crop production in many areas of the world. Direct application of phosphate rock (PR) has been shown to be a valuable source of nutrients in some conditions. This article reviews the relative agronomic effectiveness of PR with respect to water-soluble phosphate fertilizer.

World Fertilizer Nutrient Reserves—A View to the Future

The stewardship responsibilities of agriculture include the wise use of the raw materials from which commercial fertilizers are produced. Development and implementation of fertilizer best management practices (BMPs) with focus on the 4Rs—right source, right rate, right time, right place—are timely not only for short-term economic and environmental reasons, but also for the wise stewardship of the non-renewable nutrient resources upon which food, feed, fiber, and fuel production depend.
